Learnglish

Learnglish is a responsive language-learning app concept designed to empower people who want to learn a new language for work, immigration opportunities, or personal growth. The goal was to build an experience that feels useful, human, and motivation-driven, especially for busy adults.

Project Description

The design included key features such as global chatting, interactive games, reading practice with instant translation, streak tracking, and personalized skill placement through an onboarding quiz.

01 — THE PROBLEM

Most language-learning apps focus on repetition, but fail to give users a sense of community or usefulness.
Through research, I found:

  • Adults mainly want to learn a language for employment or relocation.

  • They often lack consistent motivation.

  • Many apps don’t adapt well to different skill levels or device sizes.

  • Real-world context (“How do I use this at work?”) is missing.

Learnglish aimed to solve this by creating a more interactive, community-based learning environment.

02 — Research

1. Competitive Analysis

I analyzed leading apps (Duolingo, Babbel, HelloTalk, Tandem) and mapped out gaps:

  • Community features missing or limited

  • Poor reading-based learning tools

  • Minimal real-time translation

  • Limited device responsiveness (web/tablet inconsistencies)

2. Surveys

Surveyed 20+ learners to understand barriers.
Key findings:

  • 68% wanted more real-world scenarios

  • 55% said motivation was the hardest part

  • 40% found most apps too repetitive

3. User Personas

I developed 2 main personas:

  • The Working Professional — needs quick, effective lessons to advance career

  • The Immigrant Learner — needs practical vocabulary for daily life

These personas guided every design decision.

03 — Final Design (High Fidelity)

The final UI emphasized:

  • A clean, modern interface accessible to all ages

  • A bright yet professional color palette

  • A layout that adapts seamlessly across mobile, tablet, and desktop

Key Screens:

  • Placement quiz

  • Reading screen with word highlight + instant translation popup

  • Global chat interface

  • Game-based learning screen

  • Progress dashboard (streaks + stats)

04 — Final Reflections

Learnglish was pivotal in my design journey.
It taught me:

  • How to move from ambiguity to clarity

  • How to design with real constraints (research → IA → wireframes → prototypes)

  • How to think responsively

  • How to tell a user-driven story through product design

More importantly, it sparked my love for using design as a way to connect people across cultures — something that still drives me today.
